In the meantime…
Picture this: May 2023. I was happily lost in the world of self-care and a dystopian fantasy screenplay when life threw me an unexpected plot twist – a relationship with a man who thinks he’s wiser than he actually is. One day, he confidently suggested that women like me needed to see themselves as the main character in a romance and that I should switch gears to write our love story instead. He’d often say, “Wow, you’re really creating exactly what you want,” as if he alone were the prize I’d been manifesting all along.
Love-dumb and perhaps too impressionable, I took the bait. What started as a fun writing exercise turned into a year-and-a-half-long attempt to script the perfect ending – not just for the book, but for us. Spoiler alert: the relationship didn’t make it to forever, but the story did.
And so, from the ashes of love and lessons learned, comes my romantic debut (and most likely, swan song): A Goode-Love Story.
Roni Goode didn’t believe love (nor certain career goals) was in the cards for her anymore – not real, butterflies-in-the-stomach, sweep-you-off-your-feet kind of love. At 39, she’s settled into a relatively quiet life, navigating life with her young adult daughter, building a wellness brand, trying to find balance with wine and weed, and embracing the comfort of her routines. But when her well-meaning (and meddlesome) very slightly younger sister convinces her to join a dating app “just for fun,” Roni reluctantly agrees, expecting nothing more than awkward small talk and a few more uninspiring matches.
Then she meets Jayson Love.
Charming, thoughtful, and just the right amount of different, Jayson is everything she never allowed herself to hope for. As their online conversations turn into late-night calls and eventually a real-life romance, Roni finds herself falling in love for the first time in decades. But with relationships come compromise and with love comes vulnerability, and stepping into the unknown is terrifying – especially for someone who’s spent years protecting her heart while prioritizing motherhood.
Is Jasyon too good to be true? Are the sacrifices he asks of her too much for Roni? Can Roni overcome the insecurities and past disappointments that have kept her from believing in love and herself? Or will she let fear keep her from the happiness she never expected to find at this point?
